PMIC (power supply integrated circuits), broadly speaking, are used for regulating power in an electronic circuit. More specifically, AC DC converters, offline switchers and linear regulators are the three main types of PMICs.

Among them, the NCP1076ABP065G, produced by ON Semiconductor, is a monolithic high voltage switched mode power supply (SMPS) controller. Specifically, it is a current mode step-down/step-up, adjustable frequency and adjustable SoftStart SMPS controller. This device contains an N-channel power MOSFET driver which is integrated to optimize efficiency. It also provides protection features like cycle-by-cycle current limit, thermal shutdown, soft start and short-circuit protection.

Working Principle:

In essence, this device transforms an AC input signal into a DC output voltage using an auto-modulated control scheme. In other words, it converts an AC input signal into a DC output signal with the help of a certain proportion of inductor, capacitor and resistor components by setting its current mode control output frequency independently.

To do this, it uses the input power switch (MOSFET) to rapidly switch the current so that it can transfer energy to the inductor through the power stage. The inductor then stores the energy and discharges it through the freewheeling diode to the output capacitor, which converts the DC signal. Once the capacitor is filled with energy, the freewheeling diode becomes blocked and current then flows through the output voltage divider before reaching the next input cycle.

The NCB1076ABP065G device implements a very precise start-up system. During power on, the overshoot voltage is limited when the DC bias is applied to the MOSFET driver. At the same time, its soft start functionality ensures that the output voltage is ramped up slowly to the optimal voltage. This device also provides a featured called PGOOD which can detect if the power output is correct or not.

The NCP1076ABP065G also contains over-current protection (OCP), overtemperature protection (OTP), and short-circuit protection (SCP) mechanisms in order to ensure proper functioning of the controller. Furthermore, it contains an enable/disable input pin that can be used to control the MOSFET switching ON/OFF.
