The NCP1351ADAPGEVB device, part of the Evaluation Boards - DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS, is a high efficiency, zero-voltage-switching, constant-frequency (CWF) offline switching regulator. The device utilizes a regular totem pole structure to convert an unregulated input voltage into a regulated output voltage down to 0.5V. NCP1351ADAPGEVB can operate from an input line-voltage range of 85VAC to 265VAC and up to 500VDC. It is capable of delivering up to 2A output current into a wide range of applied loads. NCP1351ADAPGEVB is designed to reduce system cost and power consumption in applications such as telecom systems, distributed power systems, data storage systems, flat-panel displays, LED lighting, and power-factor corrected AC/DC and DC/DC converters.
NCP1351ADAPGEVB has several advantages over traditional solutions due to its high efficiency and low EMI. It has an efficiency of up to 94%, and is capable of delivering up to 2A output current into a wide range of loads. In addition, it requires only a few external components and features built-in protection against short-circuit and/or overvoltage conditions. Furthermore, it has a wide-input range of 85VAC to 265VAC that can be extended up to 500VDC.
NCP1351ADAPGEVB uses a zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) constant-frequency (CWF) circuit. This is a circuit in which the switch (Mosfet) turns on and off without any voltage across it. The output voltage is controlled through on-time modulation. At the start of the switching cycle, the switch is turned on and the output voltage rises. As the load current increases, the on-time of the switch is adjusted to increase the output voltage. This achieves a constant voltage operation. The off-time of the switch is adjusted to maintain a constant frequency operation which eliminates high switching noise and reduces EMI.
The device contains built-in protection features that protect the device in case of overvoltage and/or short-circuit conditions. When an overvoltage condition is detected, the device enters into an auto-protection mode and shuts down the outputs. When a short-circuit condition is detected, the device shuts down and starts an auto-restart sequence to limit the output current. If the short is persistent, the device will remain in a shutdown state.
The NCP1351ADAPGEVB is designed to be used in applications such as telecom systems, distributed power systems, data storage systems, flat-panel displays, LED lighting, and power-factor corrected AC/DC and DC/DC converters. It offers a high efficiency, low EMI, wide input range, and a simple to implement solution compared to traditional offline switching regulator solutions. As such, it is ideally suited for low power, high efficiency applications.
