The NCP1392LCDTVGEVB is a power factor corrected, off-line universal input AC/DC switch-mode power supply (SMPS) evaluation board. This application note discusses the application field and working principle of this device.
The NCP1392LCDTVGEVB evaluation board accepts a universal input voltage range of 90 to 270Vac and is designed for high power applications. The output voltage is adjustable with an external feedback network connecting the voltage sensing pins to the inverter output. The output current is limited to 50A and the switching frequency is internally set to 120kHz. This device is capable of operating with input voltages as low as 50Vac and output voltages as low as 3V.
The board includes the NCP1394 power factor correction controller, a low-cost power MOSFET gate driver IC, and a highly efficient secondary winding soft-start and current limit signal input circuit. The NCP1394 is a single-chip solution for regulating power factor functions and controlling DC to DC applications. It features a wide input voltage range, adjustable input voltage threshold, peak current mode control, and adjustable switching frequency.
The NCP1394 operates in current mode control and precisely regulates the output voltage without the need for an external error amplifier. The control loop is stable and produces good input to output rejection when subjected to large voltage or current variations. In addition, the device includes an adjustable under-voltage lockout (UVLO) circuit and integrated an over-temperature protection (OTP) circuit.
The NCP1394 also includes an internal thermal shutdown (TS), overcurrent protection (OCP), and short circuit protection (SCP) circuits. The integrated switch-mode controller (SMC) enables the user to set up the SMPS for different electrical and thermal requirements.
The output voltage can be accurately regulated in full-load conditions from 0.3V to 40V at up to 50A using an external feedback network and an external driver circuit. The user can also select the type of current limit protection circuit used, either a foldback or a soft-start type.
The input voltage range of 90 to 270Vac is ideal for high-power applications, where the output voltage can be accurately regulated without the need for an external power transformer. The NCP1394 also features a low-startup voltage and fast power-on time.
