**PMIC - AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers** The NCP1396ADR2G is an intelligent single-channel power controller for universal offline AC-DC and constant-voltage (CV) converter applications. It integrates all the necessary functions, including power MOSFET, primary, bias winding and secondary control circuitry, to provide a constant and reliable output voltage with maximum energy efficiency. The device also includes a complete protection system. It is available in an 8-pin, small-footprint SOIC package.The NCP1396ADR2G is a single-phase AC/DC converter IC with integrated power MOSFET and primary control circuitry specifically optimized for high voltage, low power non-isolated applications such as off line AC/DC converters, battery chargers, and laptop adapters. This IC implements an output voltage regulation loop to precisely regulate the output voltage, thus avoiding the need for external voltage regulation. Furthermore, because of its integrated power MOSFET and primary control circuitry, this IC offers very low standby power losses and high efficiency. The integrated control loop provides excellent line and load transient responses, thus eliminating the need for additional compensation components. The IC features provide soft start, over current and over temperature protection, and maximum power-saving (green-mode) operation. The NCP1396ADR2G also integrates many other features that make it ideally suited for a variety of offline applications, such as high power factor, high efficiency off-line power supplies, as well as low standby power high efficiency battery chargers and laptop adapters. The NCP1396ADR2G is based on a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control method and the output voltage is regulated by varying the switching frequency. When the input voltage is below the target output voltage, the on-time of each PWM cycle is increased during each cycle. In addition to the PWM cycle, the NCP1396ADR2G also includes a hysteretic current limit protection circuit. In the event of an over-current, this protection circuit disables the PWM signal and puts the power MOSFET in an inactive state. After the current has been reduced, the PWM will be enabled again. The primary winding of the transformer is switched using the power MOSFET, which is controlled by a signal generated by the integrated PWM controller based the load regulation loop. The output voltage is sensed through a feedback network consisting of a potential divider, which is connected between the output and the GND. In order to guarantee accurate and reliable sensing, the GND of the NCP1396 is connected to the power electronic ground plane (GND plane). This GND plane is assumed to be connected to the mains ground and it gurantees that the output voltage sensing accurately reflects the actual output voltage. In the NCP1396ADR2G the magnitude of the power MOSFET gate drive signal is provided by an adjustable provide enable and voltage scaled gate control current sink. In order to provide sufficient battery charging capability, a fixed voltage source also scales the power MOSFET gate drive signal. The headroom voltage is monitored and it is used to prevent the power MOSFET from snapback and to guarantee accurate start up of the device in all operating conditions.In summary, the NCP1396ADR2G is an ideal power solution for universal offline AC-DC and constant-voltage applications and offers high efficiency, low standby power, fast transient responses and a complete protection system.
