NCP1397GANGEVB, an evaluation board for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS, is designed to allow users the ability to quickly evaluate and test the NCP1397 synchronous rectified buck controller. The board consists of the following circuitry – input power section, NCP1397 synchronous buck controller, a low cost MOSFET to guarantee high efficiency design, and an output voltage divider to measure the output voltage. NCP1397GANGEVB can operate in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) so that the design flexibility within a wide range of applications can be accomplished with minimum amount of external components.
Application Field
NCP1397GANGEVB can be used in a wide range of DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS applications, including but not limited to those in consumer electronics, power supplies, battery charger, industrial, automotive, medical, telecom, LED lighting, and energy saving applications.
Work Principle
The synchronous rectified buck controller is controlled by a PWM controller, NCP1397. It turns on the low side MOSFET to charge the output capacitors with energy from the input power supply. The high-side MOSFET turns off, and the MOSFETs switch simultaneously. The inductor current becomes zero and the output voltage is regulated by a simple voltage divider and the internal NCP1397 feedback loop. In CCM, the inductor current will remain constant and the low-side MOSFET will be always on while the output voltage is regulated. In DCM, when the inductor current is zero, both MOSFETs are off and the output voltage is regulated.
NCP1397GANGEVB also features a few external components such as the input filter capacitor, output voltage feedback capacitor, bootstrap capacitor, and loop compensation network. The input filter capacitor helps to reduce the injected noise due to switching so that the converter operates stably. The output voltage feedback capacitor is used to generate the signal for the control loop. The bootstrap capacitor supplies the necessary current to the high-side gate drive during each switching cycle while the loop compensation network helps to optimize the system performance.
