Application Field

The NCP5252MNTXG is a high-efficiency, low-dropout, step-down (buck) DC-DC regulator that can provide up to 85% efficiency. It is designed to provide regulated 5V/3A output voltage from inputvoltages up to 20V. It is optimized for portable electronics, such as cellular phones, digital cameras,camcorders, personal digital assistants (PDA), and other battery-powered portable devices. Thisregulator is also well suited for automotive, point-of-load, 5V output intermediate power conversion whereheatsinking may not be available. The NCP5252MNTXG offers integrated, low RDS(ON) P-channel MOSFET switch resistance and can handle up to 5A continuous current applications, depending on RDS(ON) value.

Working Principle

The controller uses an externally synchronized voltage-mode control system which combines a highspeed current-sensing comparator, an external error amplifier, and an internal timing network. Theerror amplifier monitors the output voltage and adjusts the duty cycle of the MOSFET switch accordingly.The current-sensing comparator senses the drain current of the MOSFET switch and the output currentduring the switch transition, and adjusts the duty cycle of the MOSFET switch towards an optimal currentlimit. The timing network controls the turn-on and turn-off timing of MOSFET switch and ensures a minimumon-time of duty cycle.

The NCP5252MNTXG incorporates integrated voltage loop compensation network. During a transientoutput, the non-inverting input of the error amplifier integrates the voltage and current slew rate. Thisintegrator compensates any internal or external open-loop errors in the system by combining steady statefeedback with dynamic feedback for improved system stability and transient response. This approachimprovements the power efficiency performance of the regulator.
