The NCS29001DR2G is a versatile high-brightness LED (HBLED) driver controller, designed to be a one-stop solution for driving single and multiple LEDs. It is designed to be used in an automotive interior illumination system, including various pushbutton, slider controls as well as dashboard lighting systems. It is also suitable for consumer applications such as LED backlights and LED lighting applications.

The NCS29001DR2G works using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). This is a technique where the average value of a wave is set by modulating its duty cycle, the proportion of time a signal is in a high state compared to the total period field. PWM signals are used to control many types of signal sources, such as motors, servos and speakers. In the case of LED drivers, changing the duty cycle controls the overall illumination of the LED, by varying the amount of current that is supplied to the LED.

The NCS29001DR2G uses a voltage or current feedback based dimming profile to ensure precise control over the average output current. It also uses programmable regulated maximum current and minimum current settings to ensure the long-term reliability of the HBLED. It utilizes a step voltage control mode, which helps to reduce visible flicker in PWM led drivers.

The NCS29001DR2G supports up to two high-brightness LED strings, which can be independently controlled as two constant current sources. It allows drivers to be configured to two constant current levels, which helps in the proper operation of multiple LEDs in the same chain.

The NCS29001DR2G also offers various protection functions including input over-voltage protection, thermal DC-DC converter over-current protection, and reverse polarity protection. To ensure the proper operation of each HBLED, the NCS29001DR2G offers integration of the LED open/short circuit diagnostics and LED over-temperature protection. Its LED open/short circuit diagnostics helps the driver to detect any LED that is defective and to ensure that the other LEDs in the chain are still operating correctly. The over-temperature protection ensures that the LED driver is not heated beyond its maximum operating temperature.
