PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators

The NCV5171EDR2G is a high efficiency, step-down DC-DC converter specifically designed for power distribution and battery charging applications. The device integrates two low-voltage synchronous buck regulators, each capable of supplying up to 3A from an input voltage provided from a wide range 5V to 36V. The device is designed with an internal MOSFET for lowest RDS(ON) and highest efficiency. Using an input voltage up to 36V, the device operates with up to 97.7% efficiency.

The two buck converters operate in parallel and are independently programmable via the I2C interface. The two high-side switches of the buck converters can be configured in either PWM- or PFM-mode. The output voltage of each converter is externally adjustable by applying a voltage to the VOUT pin.

The NCV5171EDR2G is available in a small 3 mm x 3 mm lead-free DFN or in a 6-pin DFN package.

Working Principle of NCV5171EDR2G

The NCV5171EDR2G is a two-channel DC-DC buck converter with independent feedback, PWM and power management functions on each channel. The power stage consists of an NMOS and a PMOS transistor switch. An inductor is used to generate the output voltage. The switching frequency of the converter is user-configurable in the range of 200 kHz to 1.5 MHz.

Each buck converter can be enabled/disabled independently by applying a logic-level control signal to the respective ENABLE pin. A pull-down resistor on the pin ensures a low-power shutdown. The output voltage of each converter is externally set using a voltage divider circuit that is connected to the VOUT pin.

The device features an integrated as well as external current-sense comparator for current control. The internal current-sense comparator senses the current in either sense resistor.The device can also be configured to sense the inductor current via an external comparator.

The two buck converters are powered by an external voltage source (VIN) from a wide range 5V to 36V. The device features soft-start and over-current protection (OCP). It can also be configured for a variety of system protection functions, such as over-temperature protection or under-voltage lockout (UVLO).
