NL-SIM-ATT Application Field and Working PrincipleNL-SIM-ATT, or Non-Linear Simulated Attenuator, is an indispensable component of radio frequency (RF) accessories, providing essential adjustment of signals in systems. It is primarily used in RF test and measurement systems, or automatic test equipment (ATE) to precisely measure amplitude and power in order to calibrate communication devices. Furthermore, its versatile nature allows it to be used in radar systems, fixed radio and broadcast systems, cellular networks, avionics systems, satellite communication systems and other wireless transmission forms. NL-SIM-ATT works on the principle of providing a precise and repeatable attenuation of a signal\'s amplitude. The degree of attenuation is controlled by a voltage level applied on the control pin of the SIM-ATT, which affects the trans-conductance of its internal subsystem. So when a signal is input to one port, an attenuated signal appears on the other port. This attenuation range is non-linear, variable, well defined and repeatable over a fixed range and is independent on the frequency of the input signal.These dedicated components are ideally adopted for their wide operating bandwidths, low group delay, and low insertion loss. Key factors such as high linearity, low inter-modulation, and high return losses further contribute to an improved system performance. In addition, NL-SIM-ATT also has low harmonic distortion that minimizes the effect of interference. Simple and compact in form, NL-SIM-ATT can be packaged in mini-modules that are ideal for space-restricted applications such as base stations, detectors, and other equipment. Moreover, they require no additional power or reactive components, and also feature dynamic range with analog attenuation range.Multi-port NL-SIM-ATT is also available, which features up to 4-ports allowing for simultaneous multi-signal distribution. They are generally used as amplifiers, positioners, attenuators, filters, and mux/demux. These multi-port devices provide higher linearity of adjustable ranges and are specially optimized for applications with high dynamic range.Despite its small size, NL-SIM-ATT offers a powerful performance with multiple advantages. It has a low loss, maximum isolation, excellent dynamic range, and can be used for DC or RF applications, providing two-way signal control.
