CdS cells, cadmium sulfide cells also known as photoconductive cells, are very useful devices in many applications in the field of photometry. As a photodetector, they are able to detect the intensity of light so as to give an indication of the amount of energy or even the presence of radiation. TheNORPS-12 is a self-contained optical sensor of new generation developed by a Joint Industry Group led by Advanced Micro Devices. It is based on inorganic CdS photodetectors. This device includes simple power and AND/OR logic in a single package, features solid-state operation, and offers superior reliability in outdoor, industrial, and automotive applications. It is designed to respond to incident light over a 90◦ cone angle and to operate over a wide range of ambient temperatures. Its output is a logic-level signal that will trigger a variety of applications. The temperature range of this device is between -40°C to 85°C.

Theworking principle of this NORPS-12 photodetector is based on the “photoelectric effect”. This phenomenon states that when a photon hits an atom or molecule, it can excite an electron, which can then be released and used to generate a current. This is what happens when a photon hits a cadmium sulfide cell. The electrons created from the photon will be attracted to the other end of the semiconductor material, where it will flow in a current. This current is then used to determine the amount of energy or lightthat was incident upon the material.

TheNORPS-12 photodetector is made up of two opaque electrodes on a thin semiconductor sheet. The electrodes are either made of gold or carbon and are connected to a voltage source. A photon impinging the semiconductor releases an electron which produces a current as it moves toward the anode. This current can be measured and is proportional to the amount of light that was incident upon the cell.
