The NP3500SCG is an ultra-fast, highly durable and reliable overvoltage protection thyristor product manufactured by the microelectronics provider, STMicroelectronics. The NP3500SCG is an overvoltage protection device with an active turn-off time of approximately one nanosecond, in order to ensure fast and reliable protection against surges caused by electrical transients, spikes, and load current pulses. In addition, it provides excellent clamping and peak pulse current capabilities. The NP3500SCG is designed to protect input and output pins of integrated circuits (ICs) in general-purpose and telecom applications, as well as other applications with sensitive components that require protection from overvoltage transients.
The surge protection circuit of the NP3500SCG consists of several components, including a bi-directional, non-linear resistive element, a triggering circuit, and a low-current power switching system. The bi-directional non-linear resistive element, made of a polycrystalline silicon material like that used in solar cells, is connected in parallel to the main power line. This component acts as a variable resistor when an overvoltage transient occurs, providing a maximum clamping voltage which prevents the overvoltage from entering the protected circuitry. The triggering circuit operates at a low level of current, allowing the NP3500SCG to hold off high overvoltage transients without requiring a large current drain from the power source. The switching system of the NP3500SCG is designed to allow for fast-acting non-linear protection that is capable of safely handling pulses of up to 100A peak current without sacrificing performance or device reliability.
The NP3500SCG is a versatile device, designed for use in a variety of applications, including consumer electronics and automotive electronics. In automotive electronics, for example, the device can be used to protect users from overvoltage transients arising from electrical faults or short circuits in the car’s wiring system, as well as from accidental overvoltage surges caused by inductive loads. Its fast-acting protection capabilities allow it to quickly and safely clamp overvoltage transients, protecting the car’s onboard electronics and sensitive components from damage caused by the electrical surges. It can also be used in consumer electronics, where it can be used to protect vulnerable components from accidental overvoltage transients caused by power sag events, power-line inductances and other sources.
The NP3500SCG is also suited for use in telecommunication applications, where it can be used to protect sensitive equipment from electrical transients. It is capable of offering protection against surges due to short-circuit switching transients, as well as from those caused by current pulses resulting from lightning strikes. The device’s fast-acting protection capabilities ensure that equipment is protected even in harsh environments.
The NP3500SCG is an indispensable tool for electronics applications requiring reliable surge protection. The device’s fast-acting protection capabilities ensure that critical components are protected from damaging overvoltage transients, and its low power consumption ensures that system power source drains are kept to a minimum. With its wide range of applications in consumer, automotive, and telecommunication electronics, the NP3500SCG is an essential component for anyone designing an electronic system.
