Temperature Sensors - NTC Thermistors
Temperature sensing has been extensively studied and utilized in regimes ranging from medical science and nuclear power plant construction, to thermal management and aerospace applications. One of the most broad-scoped and versatile temperature sensors in the electronics industry is the negative temperature coefficient thermistor (NTC). NTC thermistors are semiconductors comprised of metal oxides that provide a resistive response that varies with temperature.
The NTCS0805E3103GHT, manufactured by Panasonic, is a small-sized chip thermistor with a resistance of 10 kΩ at 25°C. It is suitable for a wide variety of applications such as electronic appliances, automotive systems, telephone systems, communications equipment, and home electronics. The thermistor consists of a small ceramic chip with a pair of leads embedded in plastic. It has a fast response time of 2.5s, wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C and a high accuracy of ±0.5°C.
The NTCS0805E3103GHT utilizes the physics of the temperature coefficient of resistivity to monitor changes in temperature. The electrical resistance of the thermistor varies in an inverse relationship with the temperature. When the surrounding temperature rises, the resistivity of the thermistor falls.
