The device also features an internal reverse bias diode, a reverse blocking diode, and a reverse leakage current of less than 1 pA. The device has excellent optical sensitivity greater than 10 mA/W for the red LED and greater than 20 mA/W for the green LED.

The structure of the OP521 phototransistor is based on an NPN transistor. The collector is the light-emitting diode (LED) and the base is the photosensitive layer. When light is incident onto the photosensitive layer, electrons are ejected from the atoms and current begins to flow through the device.
