Optical Sensors - Phototransistors
A phototransistor is a type of optical sensor which is based on an electronic component such as a transistor in the form of a light sensitive device.Unlike conventional transistors, which need current to be injected into the base for the transistor to become active, photo transistors respond to light by instantly creating current in the base.Phototransistors are commonly employed in a variety of industrial and consumer products ranging from simple on/off switches to complex remote control systems.
OP560A is a phototransistor with a working principle that is based on the idea that infrared radiation will be absorbed in a certain chemical composition.In this case, the OP560A sensor is made from an NPN silicon transistor with a light- sensitive semiconductor material sandwiched in between the base and the collector layers.The semiconductor material induces current when infrared radiation is absorbed. When the current reaches a certain level, the transistor gets activated and switches on.
The OP560A phototransistor is designed to respond to light of wavelengths between 700 and 950nm. This means that it is optimised for infrared light detection. The sunlight on its own doesn’t have enough infrared radiation to activate this device, however, an additional light source such as a candle, incandescent bulb, or laser can be used to provide the necessary radiation.This phototransistor is also very resistant to electrical and environmental noise, making it a suitable choice for applications where the signal-to-noise ratio needs to be as high as possible.
The OP560A is mainly used in applications where an object has to be detected in a certain area or identified from a distance. It can also be incorporated in motion detectors and security systems.As mentioned earlier, light switches that employ OP560A phototransistors are also available and they are typically used in offices, homes, and public buildings. Lastly, OP560A can be used to control the intensity of light in headlights and car horns.
