Optical sensors are composed of two parts: the detector and the receiver. Photodiodes are the primary choice of detector for modern optical sensor systems. An OP916 is an example of a photodiode-based optical sensor designed for mid-wave infrared (MWIR) applications. The OP916 is a MWIR optical detector with a GaAs/Bi/Sb-barrier type structure. It is made of a p-type area with an n-type-barrier region. This barrier region is where the MWIR radiation is absorbed. When MWIR radiation is absorbed by the barrier layer, the electrons are excited from the valence band of the barrier structure into the conduction band. This results in the flow of electrons across the barrier and the generation of an electric current.
