Optical sensors make use of a photoelectric effect, enabling them to detect light or a change in the amount of light detected. Of these optical sensors, Photointerrupters are a type of switch which can detect the interruption of a beam of light between a transmitter and receiver and turn ON or turn OFF an electrical circuit. Among the various types of Photointerrupters, Slot type, which monitors the passage of objects by sensing the slot between two pen-type or screw-type emitter and receiver, is one. One such slot type Photointerrupter is the OPB804 Transistor Output.

The OPB804 has an excellent spectral sensitivity which allows it to detect a variety of objects, including paper, wood, metals, and plastics. It has a wide operating range of -30°C to +85°C and an R1/R2 ratio of 1.5. Its operation time is in the range of 5 ms to 50 ms, and its response time to ON/OFF is within 0.5 ms. Furthermore, it has a current transfer ratio (CTR) of 400 % at lF = 5mW/cm2 which is quite good, and it can operate without the need of a mechanical mechanism or contacts.
