The OPB950 is a slot type photointerrupter integrated circuit produced by Vishay Semiconductors. An optical sensor is a device which uses light and is sensitive to light radiation or reflected light for sensing. It is composed of a light-emitting diode, a photocell, a small window where the LED and the photocell line up and a hollow tube as a protection. The OPB950 is an infrared light-receiving device with the logic output scheme, which is used for detection in a wide range of applications, including electronic/control equipment, factory automation, home appliances, entertainment equipment and telecommunications equipment.The OPB950 is a signal receptor when used in tandem with a LED. It works on the principle of light interruption. When light from the LED enters the sensor\'s window through the slot, the photocell emits a corresponding voltage signal, and the chip then transmits it as a logic level output. A logic “high” is the output when the slot is open, and the output is logic “low” when the slot is blocked. This principle makes the OPB950 an effective switch for controlling the circuit when the slot is open or closed.The OPB950 photointerrupter is used for mutual-signal transmission between two isolated systems or for the detection of a moving object. It is designed with a special aperture between the LED and the phototransistor located on the chip. When the obstruction is placed over the LED, the signal output from the photointerrupter IC is blocked. This makes the OPB950 a precision sensing device of position detection.The OPB950 is quick to respond, with a on-off delay time which does not exceed three milliseconds in normal circumstances. The dark response time is under 30 microseconds and the light response time is lower than 70 microseconds. The switching distance is normally around 3.0mm. This product also has a built-in hysteresis circuit which improves the accuracy of the detection and ensures reliable performance. Additionally, the OPB950 utilizes a fan in structure which lowers the switching threshold and increases the capacitor charging capability. The OPB950D-Bas shown on the following figure is an 8-pin dual in-line package (DIP) and uses a current sinking driver which can output 5V logic. On the other hand, the OPB950A-B is a 5-lead mini SIP with 8V temperature compensation LED drive, and the OPB950E-V is a 4-lead SOP that uses a single power supply.
