The OPT8241-CDK-EVM evaluation board featuring the OPT8241 Wide-Voltage Digital Ambient Light Sensor from Texas Instruments offers excellent ambient light sensing performance, high resolution and low power operation that make it ideal for a wide array of lighting applications. The OPT8241-CDK-EVM can be used to evaluate the OPT8241 sensor for a variety of design applications, including motion detection, natural lighting control, optical system feedback, and more. OPT8241-CDK-EVM is an evaluation module for evaluating the performance and features of the OPT8241 digital ambient light sensor.
The OPT8241-CDK-EVM features two photodetector elements with a common signal ground. Each element consists of an IR photodiode and a wide-voltage LED. The intrinsically low-impedance of the photodetectors and the addition of a p-channel MOSFET, result in exceptional accuracy, with no need for additional EMI shielding or frequency compensation. An onboard amplifier provides a differential output voltage that is proportional to the detected light.
The device is designed to operate over a wide voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V; this enables easy transitioning between development of various battery and supply-voltage scenarios. It also features low power consumption, making it a perfect choice for battery operated applications. The device offers motion detection capabilities when used in combination with motion detectors like accelerometers and gyros. This helps in detecting gesture recognition and motion detection in natural lighting scenarios.
The OPT8241-CDK-EVM can be used with the accompanying GUI to program the device and control the LED current of 50 to 500mA. This allows users to fine-tune the light source response in accordance with the spectral sensitivity of their design. The GUI also allows users to download light intensity profiles and modify the digital output range for a variety of application scenarios.
In addition, it comes with a host of advanced features including single shot (snapshot) operation, integrator-based and pulse width modes. The snapshot mode allows the device to capture a single light intensity profile and download it as a single packet of data. The integrator-based mode allows users to measure and compare light intensities over different time intervals. The pulse width mode allows users to control the LED current and the light source response for specific tasks.
The OPT8241-CDK-EVM also includes an on-board Qwiic connector that allows users to connect the module to their application via the I2C bus. This ensures a reliable and simple connection to the device for programming, debugging, and data acquisition. The device also supports a variety of communication protocols such as UART, SPI, and I2C for communication with external components.
The OPT8241-CDK-EVM board is an ideal solution for a variety of ambient light sensing applications. It offers superior accuracy in measuring light intensity and advanced features that help users get the best out of their design. With features like wide voltage input range, low power consumption, and I2C/UART/SPI connectivity, the OPT8241-CDK-EVM board is the perfect choice for designers looking to create effective ambient light sensing solutions.
