Thyristors are a variety of electronic semiconductor switches that are widely used in industrial applications and in the consumer market. The P0220SARP is a thyristor-based protection device specifically designed for telecommunications applications. It is designed to perform surge protection and isolation from voltage surges that may occur due to Lightning, High Altitude Phenomena (HAP), or Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI).
The P0220SARP has both an internal and external component. The external component is exposed to the elements and contains a Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) device. The PPTC device has a low-resistance state in normal conditions, but when exposed to higher voltages, it exhibits a very high resistance, essentially “opening” the circuit. This prevents any voltage surge from traveling along the media or being passed to any downstream equipment. The internal component of the P0220SARP contains a small Thyristor, which is also known as a “triac”. The triac is a bidirectional surge protector which will activate once the voltage on the protective device reaches a certain level. When the voltage of the surge exceeds the level of the protective device, the triac will be triggered to divert the surge away from the media, ultimately protecting the downstream equipment.
The triac is an AC-DC device, which means it can switch current in both directions. This is extremely important for telecommunications or other applications that may be operating on either direction of the wave. The triac is designed to switch on once its threshold is exceeded and switch off again when the voltage level drops to an acceptable level. This will repeat cycle as voltage levels fluctuate throughout the power line, ultimately providing consistent surge protection.
