Thyristors are often referred to as solid state switches and have been around since the 1960s. The acronym stands for "Transistor–Voltage Sensitive Switch". They are direct current pivot devices which are capable of controlling large amounts of power. As such, they are extremely useful in many different industries.

Working Principle

The Thyristor is a four-layer, three-terminal device. It consists of two p-type layers (anode and cathode) and two n-type layers (gate and control). When a negative voltage is applied to the gate terminal, the thyristor can be switched on. This allows current to flow from the anode to the cathode. When the gate voltage is removed, the Thyristor reverts to its off-state.

The Thyristor can remain on for extended periods of time and is triggered by a voltage pulse. This pulse causes the Thyristor to switch on, and when the pulse is removed, the Thyristor reverts to its off-state. It is important to note that the Thyristor does not necessarily turn off when the voltage pulse is removed; it merely reverts to its off-state until a new voltage pulse is applied.
