Thyristors, or be called TVSs, belong to a category of semi-conductor switches known as power electronics components. As a type of TVSs, P0720ECAP, supplied by APEC (Advanced Power Electronics Corporation), is widely applied in harsh industrial and environmental conditions, automotive, loads control, distributed power systems, etc.

The P0720ECAP series provides a bidirectional solid-state current limiting circuit which clamps the current and prevents over-voltage conditions. It is used for protecting circuits from surge and protection input and output in solar cells, commercial & industrial applications, and variable speed drives.

The P0720ECAP, a Low Voltage TVS (LTVS) designed to protect low-voltage devices that operate at often high-current levels, is mainly composed of a sub-microsecond turn-on and ultra-low saturation voltage thyristors. Employing a state-of-the-art guarding technology, the P0720ECAP series offers excellent clamping capability, fast response time, and high durability. It also allows for adjustable unit voltage ranges, from 6V to 180V, and adjustable current peak ratings, from 10A to 600A depending on specific application needs.

In terms of installation, the P0720ECAP requires no external components to function and can easily be mounted on a large variety of printed-circuit-boards (PCBs) and be connected in series with multiple parallel branches.

The working principle of the P0720ECAP could be explained through the following steps:

When the normal current flows through the P0720ECAP, the built-in diagnostic device(s) will detect an over-current or over-voltage through a current or voltage monitor. A signal will then be sent and this causes the thyristor to be turned-on instantaneously.

Once the thyristor turns-on, the current will be limited by the clamping voltage of the voltage-clamp circuit. At some point, a Zener diode will cease to function and will not limit the current anymore.

A metal-oxide-varistor (MOV), a type of non-linear resistor, will then prevent over-voltages from occurring. Whenever a large voltage spike occurs, the MOV will kick in and divert the current to a safe level.

After the current has been diverted, the thyristor is then turned-off and the primary current path will be restored. The entire process happens in a fraction of a microsecond and allows an uninterrupted current flow to the load.

The P0720ECAP series of LTVS is an ideal solution for applications requiring high current handling, fast response times and dependable protection from surges. Through its built-in monitoring techniques, the P0720ECAP allows for an easily adopted and implemented circuit protection solution, especially in industrial and automotive applications.
