TVS - thyristors are widely used on system protection to protect systems from the overvoltage transients caused by lightning or power cross, particularly on power systems. The TVS – Thyristor P0720SDLRP is designed to protect power systems from these damaging impulses.

The P0720SDLRP thyristor has a bidirectional polarization and works as a surge suppressor. It is composed of 4 integrated thyristors in one package that are connected in series with each other. The P0720SDLRP can be used in applications where the system voltage does not exceed 800V. The typical surge current is 2kA with a very small on-state voltage. The P0720SDLRP shall be operated with a surge over voltage of 180V maximum and a pulse rise time of 0.5μs.

The P0720SDLRP application field includes power systems, industrial, telecom systems, and military applications. The P0720SDLRP surge suppressor is ideal for use in solidly earthed power systems and provides protection from lightning and power cross transients. It is designed to reduce the damage caused by such transients and suppress them up to its maximum capacity.

The typical working principle of the P0720SDLRP is to protect the system from potentially damaging transients with its 4 integrated thyristors connected in series. When the surge overvoltage is greater than 180V, the thyristors activate, effectively limiting the surge voltage to a low voltage. As the surge current passes through the thyristors, it is diverted via the thyristors’ junction capacitances. Therefore, the P0720SDLRP protection is mainly based on its fast switching and active clamping action.

The P0720SDLRP also has a low on-state voltage which enables it to quickly react with minimum voltage loss during a surge, while still providing effective protection. This feature is beneficial in applications which require fast response times and minimized voltage losses. One example is a lighting protection system where the P0720SDLRP is able to react faster while keeping the voltage in check, thereby providing better protection.
