P1402AAL Application Field and Working PrincipleThyristors, or silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs) are bidirectional semiconductor voltage devices with three or four p-n junction terminals. P1402AAL is a kind of thyristor which features an Early Trigger Current (gate current) of 700mA and a Peak On-State Current (holding current) of 14A. The P1402AAL is one of the highest voltage thyristors manufactured by IXYS and is used in AC line switch applications up to 600V. These devices offer high surge capacity ratings, and are suitable for capacitive loads.The P1402AAL thyristor has three p-n junction terminals, and it is capable of blocking high voltages only when it is in “OFF” state. Its gate terminal is used to control its “ON” and “OFF” states since it is an SCR. The most common application of SCR is a switch in AC line switch applications. It is used to control the flow of power from the AC mains to a load, such as a light bulb or motor. Since it doesn’t require a separate power supply, it is more efficient than a relay or a mechanical switch.The working principle of a thyristor is quite simple. When the gate terminal is in the “OFF” state, the thyristor acts like an open switch and no current flows through it. When a positive voltage is applied to the gate terminal, it becomes “ON” and the thyristor can allow current to flow through it. When the gate voltage is removed, the thyristor stays “ON” and holds the current till the current through it falls below its rated holding current. Then the thyristor turns “OFF” and blocks the flow of current.In summary, the P1402AAL thyristor is a highly versatile and efficient device with many advantages over relays and mechanical switches. It is capable of blocking high voltages, can be used in AC line switch applications up to 600V, and has a relatively low gate current of 700mA. The thyristor also has the ability to stay “ON” after a gate voltage is applied and can hold current even after the gate voltage is removed.
