Thyristor-based Systems: P1500SALRP Application Field and Working Principle
The P1500SALRP, or Protective Level Autonomous Level Reactor Protection System, is athyristor-based system and a distributed reactive power security system designed for power stations and industrial wind turbines. The P1500SALRP, developed by the American company Iberdrola, is intended for reactive power regulation, fault detection and protection, and other miscellaneous protective functions. It operates as an independent system with minimal dependence on other systems and controllers.

Working Principle
The P1500SALRP is based on the thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR) principle and utilizes a group of thyristors connected to the power network in order to control the reactive power. The thyristors are controlled by a power converter connected to the external communication network. The power converter, in turn, is connected to the external communication network and acts as an interface between the P1500SALRP system and the utility operator in order to exchange information. The power converter also controls the thyristors and converts the electrical energy into a form suitable for electronic control.When the reactive power exceed the preset security control limit in the power network, the thyristors in the P1500SALRP will fire in sequence and inject reactive power into the network, thus returning the reactive power to a safe value. When reactive power production from wind turbines drops, the thyristors will cut off the power supplied to the network and terminate the injection process.
