TVS – Thyristors
P2304UBRP is a thyristor (also known as Silicon Controlled Rectifier, SCR) which uses a three-layer diode design. In general, these types of devices are used to prevent high voltage spikes hitting delicate digital electronics, a process known as transient voltage suppression (TVS). The particular device in consideration is part of the small signal thyristor family and is typically used in the protection of consumer electronics, computers, and telecommunications equipment. It is also noteworthy that this particular device is designed for surface mounting.
Application Field and Working Principle
P2304UBRP is primarily used in industrial settings to protect against transients, reduce power dissipation, and ensure reliable operation of delicate electronics equipment. Generally, a thyristor is triggered by first passing current through its gate terminal to allow current flow from its anode to its cathode. While the current is then held constant via the gate terminal, the thyristor can carry large currents up to the maximum current rating of the device. When it is exposed to high voltage transients, the gate terminal will be triggered to stop current flow from the anode to the cathode, thereby preventing further damage.
On the other hand, P2304UBRP device is used for small signals and overvoltage protection for equipment operating at 5 V DC or less, travelling on energized lines such as telecommunications. The device comes with a peak off-state voltage of 9 V, making it suitable for protecting various items such as power supplies, PC motherboards and the onboard electronics of many other devices. To work, the device must be placed on the energized line, with its cathode connected to the positive terminal. At this point, all current is passed through the gate terminal of the device and enters the anode.
The anode subsequently conducts the current to the negative terminal, during which time the device is in its “on” state and the voltage drop across it is minimal. When a high voltage transient is noted, the gate terminal is triggered and the current is diverted from the anode, forcing the device into its “off” state. As a result, no current can flow through and the high voltage transient is prevented from reaching the delicate equipment.
