Rotary Potentiometers

A rotary potentiometer, also known as a rotary rheostat or variable resistor, is a three-terminal component that serves as a variable impedance or voltage divider. It works by having an adjustable resistance contact that enables a variable voltage to be tapped at various points along its resistance curve.Rotary potentiometers are used in a number of applications from measuring the position of a control knob to regulating power supplied to an electrical device. They are an ideal solution for level control, linear adjustment, and feedback applications in which a direct and accurately controlled voltage output is required.The P260S-D1AS3CB5K is a high performance, single-turn, rotary potentiometer designed specifically to operate in harsh environments despite the presence of dust, dirt and moisture. Its broad operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and IP67 sealed construction makes it suitable for automotive, industrial and medical applications.

Working Principle

At the heart of the P260S-D1AS3CB5K is a circular track consisting of a resistance element connected to a sliding contact. The contact is linked to a shaft and moved by a knob, dial, or other mechanical input device. As the contact moves along the resistance track, the resistance between the three terminals changes. This change in resistance determines the output voltage that is tapped at the third terminal with the first two terminals remaining at ground.The internal construction of the P260S-D1AS3CB5K consists of a full conductive carbon element embedded between carbon membranes. This element is distributed on CAD=3500±500 times, and the distance between the resistance elements is an impressive 0.4 ± 0.01mm. This feature ensures greater accuracy and reliable operation even when subjected to severe temperature fluctuations and vibration.The terminal jumping distance is designed for a minimum 0.3mm gap to ensure excellent disconnection reliability and prevents crosstalk between adjacent pins. The resistance element is coated with a polyester insulation material between carbon membranes and also terminations providing stable and consistent electrical contact.The sliding contact of the P260S-D1AS3CB5K is made of a conductive polymer compound with excellent wear-resistance and excellent electrical contact behaviour. It is designed to maintain a 5 ± 0.5mm resistance travel and provides a continuously adjustable range of resistance.

Rheostats

Rheostats are similar to rotary potentiometers in that they are used to adjust resistance in an electrical circuit. However, unlike the rotary potentiometer, the rheostat operates with only two terminals and the current is continuous, rather than being tapped at various voltages.Rheostats are commonly used to control the amount of current in an electrical circuit, such as in dimmers and electric ovens, which regulate the amount of heat produced. This type of variable resistor is ideal for such applications as it can be adjusted on the fly, while a rotary potentiometer requires the knob to be manually adjusted.The P260S-D1AS3CB5K is a single-turn, rheostat that is encased in a high-precision die-cast aluminium housing and features an impressive resistance range of 0 – 10K Ohms. Working Principle
