TVS - Thyristors

The P3504UALTP is a thyristor, belonging to the larger family of TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors). As such, thyristors are four-layer semiconductors comprising two PN junctions which predict the termination of conducting current when they experience a certain voltage, meaning that, while thyristors are usually found in switches, they may be used to suppress electrical noise as well.

Application Field

The P3504UALTP positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thyristor is most commonly used in applications where it is necessary to protect against overvoltage transients. Its threshold is adjustable, and with a higher threshold, the P3504UALTP can be used in PFC circuits as an active filter against EMI generated noises. As an example, 3D televisions use the P3504UALTP to protect against EMI generated by the television over many different frequencies, and as a result provide a more consistent viewing experience. Other applications of the P2504UALTP include power supplies, mobile phones,game consoles, and audio equipment.

Working Principle

The P3504UALTP works by using a three-level gate setup. A positive voltage applied to the anode (A) voltage delivers apositive voltage to the gate, which causes the gate voltage to rise up to a certain threshold. At this point, the gate voltage creates an oppositely charged ionic current on the other side of the NPN junction, creating a suppressive current. A sharp increase in voltage at this point will cause the device to shut off, thereby preventing overvoltage. When operating correctly, the P3504UALTP limits incoming overvoltage to an acceptable level, thereby protecting the connected device.

The P3504UALTP is designed to operate at a wide range of temperatures, from –55°C to +150°C. Additionally, the device is constructed using a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) based PN junction structure, which allows for a high degree of protection against ESD and other forms of circuit damage. As such, the P3504UALTP is well suited for use in a wide variety of industrial and consumer applications.
