TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are a form of diode that have been developed to act as a limiting device in order to protect sensitive electronic components from high, potentially damaging, transient voltages. The P4KE43C TVS diode is specifically designed to protect circuits from overvoltage transients caused by inductive switching, also referred to as a load switching transient, that are generated when a relay, switch, solenoid or other inductive load is switched off.The P4KE43C is a uni-directional, non-polar device, and is constructed with a PNPN silicon diode and a silicon avalanche diode, and is made to be connected in parallel with the protected circuit.

The P4KE43C has been designed to operate in one of two ways depending on the type of overvoltage protection that is required. If it is forward overvoltage protection that is required, the P4KE43C has a voltage-controlled Zener-based breakdown mode that begins to conduct current when the voltage increases sufficiently. This reduces the voltage that is applied to downstream components. Alternatively, if the P4KE43C is reverse biased, then an avalanche breakdown occurs, which in turn triggers a switching action that quickly shunts the excess voltage.

The P4KE43C has a range of features including: high operating junction temperature capability (up to 150 °C), a wide range of operating voltage (from 42 V to 183 V), fast response time (<10ns for the peak pulse voltage to be clamped to the specified levels) and low-capacitance (between 6 pF and 15 pF). The device also has excellent clamping capability with a Peak Pulse Power of 400 W at 10/1000 μs and 8000A. Additionally, the P4KE43C has been designed to be inherently RoHS compliant.
