The diode can be used in both AC and DC applications and is capable of providing protection against surges of over 10kV. The working principle behind the P4KE47-E3/54 is relative simple. The diode is designed to have a rapid response time and low on-state resistance. The diode is made up of two layers, a P-type semiconductor layer and an N-type semiconductor layer. Both layers are connected and the P-type layer is the more responsivie layer. When a voltage transient, either positive or negative, passes through the P-type layer at the anode of the diode, the current is diverted from the current path it was travelling and is instead passed through the N-type layer which provides a shunting path for the current thus protecting the circuit and device from any further damage. The current is stopped due to the low on-state resistance of the diode.
