TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes, also called as clamp diodes, are a class of semiconductor devices designed for protecting electronic circuits from voltage and current transients. P4KE51C-E3/54 is a fast-response and cost-effective TVS-diode series from Littelfuse, which is designed to protect signal lines exposed to the danger of induced high surge or ESD (Electrostatic Discharge).

Application fields

P4KE51C-E3/54 series TVS diodes can be applied in various fields, such as automotive electronics, telecom equipment, computer systems and consumer electronics. It effectively prevents voltage transients by diverting damaging current away from sensitive components, maximizing power supply system\'s immune to both conducted and radiated interference. Specifically, the device can be used to protect a broad range of communication interfaces, such as RS-232, RS-485, DVB-T, LAN, SCSI, V.35, USB and FIREWIRE.

Working Principle

P4KE51C-E3/54 series TVS diodes work as the main component for transient protection. When the operating voltage rises above the device\'s peak pulse power rating (Ppk), the device will be activated to protect itself from damaging transients. Before the activation, it allows a low-level of current flow in the forward direction without generating sites. When a transient voltage appears, the device will switch to the breakdown mode and start a reverse polarity conduction. This will allow a higher amount of current to flow in the reverse direction for a few nanoseconds to neutralize any potential surge. After the transient voltage is neutralized, the device returns to its original condition.

The device\'s clamping action will divert transient voltage away from the protected lines and safely route them to the ground. Its excellent clamping performance across a wide temperature range reduces the risk of system damage and helps increase system reliability. In addition, its inductive loads are not affected by the devices. This function enables them to be used in any kind of application with nominal current transmission.
