TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are used to protect sensitive electronic components from damage due to transient voltages that typically occur in switch-mode power supplies, transformers, and other power applications. The P6KE380A-G is a 600W (600 Watts) unidirectional TVS diode that employs a low-capacitance, glass-passivated junction to provide excellent clamping capability and high surge capability. This diode can withstand reverse avalanche energy and is designed to meet the IEC 61000-4-5 requirements.
The P6KE380A-G has a breakdown voltage of 380 V and a reverse stand-off voltage of 5.1 V. It is provided in the SMA-jedec JESD22-B11-1 package and operates over an ambient temperature range of -55°C to +150°C. The product is RoHS-compliant as well as halogen-free.
The P6KE380A-G TVS diode has a wide range of applications, including: power over Ethernet (PoE); automotive; telecommunications systems; DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort interfaces; motor control systems; Panasonic’s Micro Power LED technology; flyback transformers; and solid-state relay systems.
The working principle behind the P6KE380A-G can be explained using two crucial electrical concepts: breakdown voltage (VBR) and stand-off voltage (VSO). VBR is the voltage threshold at which current starts to flow in the diode, while VSO is the voltage that must be established in the diode before it can begin to conduct. During transient voltage surge events, the P6KE380A-G is designed to clamp the incoming voltagel level to a safe value, which is set by the breakdown voltage of the device.
When the voltage level reaches the breakdown voltage of the TVS diode, it begins to conduct, allowing current to flow around the circuit. This clamps the voltage by reducing the energy available in the transient, thus protecting the components from the high voltages. Once the transient voltage has subsided, the diode will return to its non-conductive state, thus providing a recoverable protection system.
The P6KE380A-G has a low clamping voltage over a wide operating temperature range, and its glass-passivated junction also provides good surge robustness and low capacitance levels. These features provide superior protection of delicate electronic components against transient voltages.
