TVS diodes are increasingly gaining importance in electronic design due to their greater capability in dissipating transient energy than conventional components. The P6KE9.1CA-B is one of the TVS diodes, which is a unidirectional 6.5 Volt Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) with a 9.1A peak pulse current. TVS diodes are commonly used in power systems, microprocessors, data and communications networks, automotive, military and aerospace systems, both as protection from transients and in the prevention of Electro-Static Discharge (ESD).
The P6KE9.1CA-B is particularly designed to protect against electric transients generated by switching power traces and flowing between the power and ground lines. The device features low dynamic resistance (rdyn) which provides a very low clamping enveloped and excellent stability. It has a unidirectional (one-way) power flow and should be used in applications which require protection from surges or high voltage spikes. In addition, the device is RoHS compliant.
The P6KE9.1CA-B is typically used in applications such as touch screens, USB 2.0 protection, LCD display control, video systems and high speed data lines. It consists of an inner diode which conducts in the reverse direction and triggers an avalanche breakdown. When a voltage above the Reverse Stand-off Voltage rating is applied, the P6KE9.1CA-B turns on and bypasses the transient energy to its terminals. Depending on its Breakdown Voltage and current limit, the device can rapidly divert up to 9.1A from both terminals.
In regard to its operation, the P6KE9.1CA-B operates in two stages. The first stage is known as the breakdown stage, which involves the inner diode switching from reverse breakdown to forward conduction. In this stage, the current is limited to the avalanche current. During the second stage, known as the holding stage, the current is limited to the clamp current. As the voltage across the diode continues to rise, the current eventually reaches the clamp current and remains constant above that level until the voltage drops back below the clamp level.
The P6KE9.1CA-B is a versatile device in terms of its application, providing a higher level of safety and protection for data lines and switching power traces. It offers robust protection by protecting against electrostatic discharge (ESD) as well as against voltage transients, which can be generated by power supply or line spikes. In addition, the device is also RoHS compliant, making it a cost-effective and necessary solution for applications at risk of transient voltage and ESD.
