TVS - Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes), use high voltage breakdown capabilities of P6SMAJ8.5ADF diodes to protect electronic circuits from voltages that exceed certain levels. TVS devices can protect against relatively large surges, usually caused by transients induced by other electronic circuits in the system, or from static electricity or lightning strikes in outdoor applications.

The P6SMAJ8.5ADF application field is mainly related to small signal switching or low-level power line protection. It has a variety of common uses in its various applications including low power signals and low-level AC/DC switching signals. P6SMAJ8.5ADF is ideal for protecting circuits from both overvoltage and ESD (electrostatic discharge) in a low voltage, low current system. Typical applications that P6SMAJ8.5ADF are used in include; power supplies, automotive, consumer electronics, and telecommunications.

The current-limiting charateristic of P6SMAJ8.5ADF is its true advantage over other diode types. The working principle of P6SMAJ8.5ADF is based on two regions of break down voltage. The first region is a steep increase in the forward current to breakdown voltage ratio when the forward voltage just reaches its breakdown voltage. The second region is described as an avalanche breakdown, in which increasing the magnitude of the current further causes a rapid increase in the breakdown voltage.

The combination of the two regions causes a significant amount of energy to be dissipated in a brief period of time, limiting the current and protecting the system. The protective action of the P6SMAJ8.5ADF is instantaneous and no configuration is required, making these devices ideal for use in fast responding protection solutions. In addition, the device turn-on time is extremely short, minimizing potential damage in cases where fast clamping is required.
