TVS (transient voltage suppressor, also known as voltage-variable diode, TVS diode or transil, is a kind of voltage-controlled diode which is suitable for protecting low-noise signals from electrical overstress (EOS) or ESD (electrostatic discharge). The P6SMB120CA is an all-glass, planar and in-line ultra-low capacitance diode TVS, suitable for high-speed signal transmission and signal protection in RFI/EMI noisy environment, such as portable device and computers related accessory. It is designed to protect signals with a maximum peak pulse power of 60 watts (10/1,000 microseconds) and a maximum peak pulse current of 700 amperes (10/1000 microseconds).

The working principle of the P6SMB120CA is quite simple: In normal operation, it acts as a low-resistance path, allowing current to flow freely between its two metal pins. However, when the applied voltage exceeds the designed breakdown voltage, the P6SMB120CA switches into reverse conductivity and quickly conducts the current away before the voltage has a chance to reach the equipment, protecting it from damage. This reverse conductivity is referred to as a "clamping voltage" – the amount of voltage the TVS will shunt away to protect against.

P6SMB120CA can be used in a variety of applications. It is especially suitable for data communication circuits, signal processing circuits, handheld terminals, digital home appliances, and industrial control circuits. For example, it can be used as a first line of defense against ESD, EMI and EOS, protecting signal data and other sensitive components against these destructive forces. It can also be used for signal line protection of microcontroller and microprocessor reset lines in complex systems, or for DC power protection for power supply lines in consumer electronics.

Other applications include protection of antennae or other user input/output points from static discharge, image sensors and high-speed data transmission lines. Furthermore, it can also be used in communications, instrumentation, lighting and motor control systems. It can also be integrated into mobile phone docking stations or TV tuners.

It’s working principle enables the device to clamp quickly and remove high-energy pulse that could otherwise cause destruction of other bonded elements.
