Working Principle

The P6SMB150AHE3/52 is a zener-breakdown diode that conducts current in the reverse direction when the voltage across it reaches the breakdown voltage, known as the Zener voltage. It can withstand surge voltages up to 600W peak pulse power (tP = 8/20μs) and up to 150W maximum operating power.

When the over-voltage reaches the breakdown voltage, current will flow in the reverse direction. The P6SMB150AHE3/52’s internal fold-back current limiting or non-linearities act to reduce the surge current and then extinguish it. This process is known as clamping. Clamping results in a reverse conduction voltage drop across the diode which is proportional to the current that it is conducting.
