TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) or commonly known as a Zener diode is a type of avalanche diode designed to protect electrical or electronic systems from voltages surges. The P6SMB58C is one such diode used to divert high voltage peaks away from sensitive electronic components. This device has a polarization zener voltage of 5.8V and is capable of peak pulse power ratings of up to 500 W.
The P6SMB58C is a form of transient voltage suppression using a two terminal device that is connected in parallel to the line carrying the unwanted transient voltage. The device consists of a junction between an anode and a cathode that, when placed in parallel, allow current to flow directly from the power line to the diode. This current allows a voltage drop across the diode which is sufficient enough to absorb the surge energy.
The characteristic of the P6SMB58C makes it an ideal device for protecting electronic circuits from high peak voltage transients such as those found on power lines or from high speed data lines. The device’s 5.8V min zener voltage rating ensures that the device is able to protect the circuit against transients up to 500 W for a short time. The basic working principle of the P6SMB58C is to use a zener region junction between an anode and a cathode. When the surge occurs, current flows into the diode at a rate that depends on the instantaneous voltage. The current flows in a reverse direction, setting up a zener junction and generating a reverse breakdown voltage between the anode and the cathode. The breakdown voltage then limits the amount of current that can flow through the diode.
In addition to suppressing high peak voltages, the P6SMB58C can also be used in many applications including: low leakage over voltage, low capacitance, low series resistance, low thermal impedance, and low standard hysteresis.
