The operating principle of the PBA100F-24-JR switch mode AC/DC converter is similar to all other switch-mode regulators. The power stage of the converter consists of two switches (either transistors or MOSFETs) and an inductor. The switches are driven at a predetermined frequency by the controller, which is mainly responsible for regulating the output voltage. The main components of the PBA100F-24-JR power stage are depicted in the figure below. The operation of the converter can be divided into four distinct modes: the continuous (or on) phase, the switching phase, the diode-off phase, and the diode-on phase.

When one of the switches is closed, current flows and builds up in the inductor. This is called the continuous (or on) phase as the current magnitude increases constantly and the switch is open for relatively long time. Then the switch is opened and the current decays towards zero. This is the switching phase. Now the voltage across the inductor induces a voltage of opposite polarity across the diode, and current starts flowing in the load. This is the diode-off phase. As the current starts decaying in the load, the diode turns off and the voltage across the inductor will induce a voltage of opposite polarity across the switch. This is the diode-on phase and the cycle is completed. This cycle is repeated as long as input voltage is applied.
