Optoisolators, also known as optocouplers, are optoelectronic devices used to isolate two electrically separate circuits. They provide galvanic isolation between input and output to eliminate the risk of electrical shocks and ground loops. The most common optoisolators use a light emitting diode (LED) and a phototransistor to transfer information between the two circuits. Examples of these devices are the Optotraxx PC367N, also known as a transistor, photovoltaic output optoisolator.

The PC367N is an optoisolator whose main purpose is to provide galvanic isolation between two circuits. It is composed of a light emitting diode (LED) that is driven by either DC or AC voltage and a phototransistor that amplifies the current.
