The PC847x family of optoisolators are optically coupled isolators suitable for the protection of electronic circuits against electrical transients and voltage spikes. The optoisolator consists of a pair of optical and electrical components that are optically coupled by illuminating a solid-state LED with an error signal from an output circuit or sensor. By physically separating the input and output components with an LED, the PC847x optoisolator can provide protection from noise and allow for high speed communications between circuits.

Applications include pulse-width-modulated power supplies, digital logic switching, isolation amplifiers, current sense amplifiers, high-voltage AC/DC converters, li-ion battery protection circuits, motor control, isolators for ultrasonic instrumentation, and pulse-width modulators.

The PC847x photovoltaic optoisolator has a built-in LED for accurate and reliable operation. The LED in the optoisolator produces an infrared (IR) light when the output circuit is powered. This light strikes the photo-detector, which then produces a voltage proportional to the intensity of the IR light. This in turn acts as a bi-directional switch allowing for the isolation of circuits from each other.

The sophistication of the PC847x optoisolator enables fast switching speeds of up to 10kHz with a switching time of 1µs, allowing for very fast response times. The optoisolator also features a low TEoff and low leakage current of 1µA, making it an excellent choice for low current applications. The PC847x also has an exceptionally low thermal resistance of 14K/W enabling it to be used in high-temperature environments.

The PC847x optoisolators offer excellent on-state current transfer ratios (CTR) of up to 2050%. This ensures excellent power handling capabilities, and allows for accurate signal conditioning and control. The low power dissipation of these optoisolators make them extremely energy efficient, which is especially important in applications where energy savings is paramount.

The PC847x optoisolator is available in two basic package types: the DIP and the SIP. Both packages come with an integral mounting clip that allows for easy installation and high reliability. The DIP package is particularly useful for applications where long-term operation is required, whereas the SIP can be used for applications where a smaller form factor is desired.
