The PCF8574ADGVRG4 is an Interface - I/O Expanders of the STMicroelectronics range. This component is an 8-bit I/O expander in 20 pin SOIC package, commonly found in many applications & platforms. It’s important to note that the I/O pins of the device are differentiated into two categories, 4 of them (P0-P3) are open-drain outputs and the other four (P4-P7) are inputs. This kind of separation is useful to easily recognize the directions of each pin.
The technology used in this component is based in an I2C protocol, an open-drain output only capable to work in one-direction data transfer. To simplify the understanding, the I2C protocol is a type of serial communication technology, capable to connect several devices with command and data communications, the maximum frequency rate it can reach is 100Khz.
