The PCF8575PWG4 (hereafter, PCF8575) is part of the extended family of PCF857x I/O expanders from NXP. PCF8575 is a 16-bit I/O expander that utilizes the 2- wire Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) bus for serial data communication. It adds sixteen I/O lines to any microcontroller that already contains an I2C master (or has one added externally) for enhanced system flexibility.
The PCF8575 is a high-speed, low-power CMOS I/O Expander designed for 2-wire bidirectional I2C-bus communication. It has a supply voltage range of 2.3 V to 5.5 V, allowing it to work either with 3.3 V or 5 V systems. It is pin-compatible with the PCF8574, and provides 16-bit I/O expansion at speeds of up to 400 kbit/s. The PCF8575 can operate as either an input or output port, depending on the setting of the corresponding register bit. Then, it writes the data byte of the desired I/O port and reads back an acknowledge (ACK) from the PCF8575. Once the data byte is written, the microcontroller can issue a stop signal (P) and the I/O port is updated. The microcontroller can then issue a start signal (S) again, followed by a read byte (R) to read back the I/O port status. The PCF8575 then sends the data byte of the I/O port and the microcontroller sends an acknowledge (ACK) before the PCF8575 sends the stop signal (P) to end the read cycle.
