Aluminum-polymer capacitors, comprising both aluminum and polymer electrolyte, are a variant of the more traditional aluminum electro lytic capacitors already in use. They have higher capacitance density (measured in Farads per Volt-second) and superior temperature stability, thanks to the combination of aluminum and polymers.The most common form of aluminum-polymer capacitor is the Japanese-invented PCR1H220MCL1GS. This device is a hermetically sealed capacitor, completely encased in an aluminum shell with a polymeric electrolyte between the aluminum shell and a pair of electrodes. The geometry of this particular capacitor is cylindrical, and its capacitance is 0.22µF ±10%, operating on a voltage of 25V DC.The PCR1H220MCL1GS is well suited to consumer electronic applications such as audio, automotive car audio systems and consumer AC/DC power supplies. The capacitor has a wide temperature range, of -40°C to +105°C, making it suitable to work in extreme conditions without any significant loss in capacitance.The working principle of the PCR1H220MCL1GS is relatively simple. When a voltage is applied across the two terminals of the capacitor, the electrodes attract electric charges of different kinds. These charges attract each other across the electrolyte and form electric fields, the strength of which further increases the attraction between them. This creates an electric charge, which in turn stores energy in the capacitor and is released again when the electric field is reversed.The PCR1H220MCL1GS features improved endurance, with an endurance rating of 5000 hours at 105°C, as well as a wide voltage range from 4V to 100V.
