DC-DC converters are the engineers\' tool of choice when dealing with low voltage applications. But, what is a DC-DC converter, and what is its application field and working principle? Well, first of all, let\'s take a look at what the three letters "DC" stand for in DC-DC converters.The "DC" in the name of a DC-DC converter stands for direct current. This type of converter allows for the direct conversion of energy from one DC source to another DC source. The direct current is different from alternating current, which can change direction and therefore requires an alternating current circuit or transformer to convert energy from one source to another. The application fields for DC-DC converters is vast due to the versatility of the device. It can be used in small scale portable electronics such as mobile phones and laptops, as well as larger scale industrial applications such as electric vehicles. DC-DC converters can also be used for grid energy storage applications such as energy harvesting from renewable sources or for UPS back-up power applications for reliability of service. The working principle of a DC-DC converter is based on the principle of electrical transformation.
