DC-DC converters are an important component of electronic systems that produce higher, lower, or isolated DC output voltages from a DC input voltage. In wide use since the 1950s, advancements in switching technology have led to an extended range of DC-DC converter topologies. These components enable the design engineer to maximize efficiency and minimize power loss in a variety of mechanisms, offering an array of capabilities from conversion of low voltage to a higher voltage along with greater power conversion efficiency and power density.
The PE01S1205A is a synchronous step-down DC-DC converter designed to efficiently convert a 12 V input to a constant 5V output with an adjustable transconductance control frequency up to 1.4 MHz. This converter offers high efficiency and low average output voltage ripple, and is available in a low‑profile thermally‑enhanced 6-pin LLP package that provides superior heat sinking with no additional components required. With a wide range of operating temperature (-40°C to +85°C), the PE01S1205A is well suited for a variety of industrial and commercial applications such as powering microprocessors, DSPs, and communication or data processing systems in industrial control systems, instrumentation, servers, routers and switches.
The working principle of this DC-DC converter is based on the pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. This method is based on the use of a PWM signal which is generated by an oscillator circuit and applied to a driver circuit. The driver circuit then drives the power MOSFET switch at a certain predetermined switching frequency. During the switching period, the power MOSFET conducts and energy is transferred from the input voltage source to the output. During the non-switching period, the MOSFET is turned off and the energy stored in the output inductor is transferred to the load.
The output voltage is regulated by varying duty cycle of the PWM pulses. Duty cycle is the ratio between the amount of time the switch is on and the total switching period. A higher duty cycle means the switch is on for a longer amount of time and more energy is injected into the output, thus increasing the output voltage. The load is sensed at the output through an optocoupler circuit, which compares the output voltage to an internal voltage reference. When the output voltage exceeds the reference voltage, the optocoupler sends a signal to the control circuit, instructing it to adjust the duty cycle in order to reduce the output voltage.
