In short, the PFE30028 bridges between the input source and load, operating as a switch. This is done by controlling the switch’s ‘on’ time in order to control the amount of energy transmitted to the load.

The detailed operation starts with the input voltage being applied to the primary winding of the inductor, L. The primary current builds up linearly, with a resulting increase in the flux of the magnetic core, until the peak current limit is reached. At that point the power switch stops conducting, and the magnetic field collapses and transfers the stored energy to the secondary side.

Now, the stored energy is rectified by a synchronous rectifier and is then filtered by Cout. To maintain regulation, the power switch is turned on once the magnetic field collapses and the current in the primary falls below a certain threshold. This process is repeated throughout the switching cycle, allowing the converter to store and transfer energy each time the power switch is turned on and off.

The PFE30028 is used in a variety of applications, from office equipment to consumer electronics. It is an ideal choice for regulating the power level in low-cost, space conscious, and low-power applications.
