PTC resettable fuses commonly referred to as Polyfuse, are a relatively new type of fuses. It is a two terminal passive component that provides short-circuit protection to a certain level of current. It is usually used in electronic circuits and automotive applications as an over-current protection device.
PFNF.020.2 is a sub-category of PTC resettable fuses that are specially tailored for automotive applications. The fuse is rated for a maximum current of 2.5 A and can withstand a voltage up to 32 VDC. It comes with a wide operating temperature range from -40°C (-40°F) to +125°C (257°F).
The main benefit of this type of PTC resettable fuse is that it prevents damage to components caused by excessive initial currents. When a short circuit or over-current occurs, the PTC fuse will trip, interrupting the circuit. The PTC fuse then automatically shuts down and then reset to its original state, allowing current to flow normally again.
This makes it an ideal choice for automotive applications where control over currents is critical. Apart from preventing damage to components, it also prevents short-circuits due to an inadvertent increase in current through the circuit.
In terms of working principle, PFNF.020.2 operates by compromising two separate components. The first is a resistor which limits current flow when the voltage rises above a certain threshold. The second is a thermistor which acts as an over-current detector and limits the flow of current beyond a safe level.
When the device is exposed to a voltage surge or an increased current, the thermistor will detect the over-current and activate the opening of the circuit. This will cause current limitation and temperature increase. As the temperature increases due to the over-current, the component will open up and the circuit will be disconnected preventing further damage.
Once the overheating caused by the surge has cooled, the fuse will trip and reset to its original state, ready to protect the circuit from the next over-current.
Due to these features, the PFNF.020.2 makes a great choice for automotive applications such as electric vehicles, electric bikes, portable medical devices, and more. It provides a safe and reliable way to prevent damage to components from sudden over-currents and surges, while also protecting the overall device from short-circuiting.
It can be easily installed on printed circuit boards or other components, making it an ideal choice for over-current protection in a variety of applications. With its wide temperature range and reset time, PFNF.020.2 provides reliable and safe protection for sensitive electrical components and devices.
