The PGA450Q1EVM is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit designed by Texas Instruments to allow users to evaluate and demonstrate the features and capabilities of the PGA450Q1 non-contact current sensor IC product line. The PGA450Q1EVM application field includes motor control, bipolar current sensors, and two-wire power sources across a broad range of current sensing applications such as white goods, home appliances, energy metering, HVAC, lighting, automotive, and industrial applications.
The PGA450Q1 device is a fully integrated two-wire non-contact current sensing solution that provides an economical, robust and space efficient solution for a variety of current measurement applications. It offers low latency sensing of AC and DC currents and is compatible with both AC and DC power sources, making it suitable for a wide range of current sensing applications. The PGA450Q1 features a wide AC/DC input voltage range, a bandwidth up to 1MHz, low power consumption and high accuracy.
The PGA450Q1EVM enables users to easily evaluate the performance of the PGA450Q1 device and its supporting circuitry. It includes a power supply, a DC offset adjustability for current offset calibration, a power up/down transistor, and a 3-phase bridge with an overtemperature protection circuit. The kit also features a USB interface with access to the board’s configuration parameters, a control terminal, a warning output, and a RS-232/UART serial connection interface.
The PGA450Q1EVM evaluation board works on the principle of inductive based non-contact current sensing. The board features a central current transformer (CT) with a secondary coil structure that enables on-board current sensing. The central CT is connected to the PGA450Q1 device, which provides three differential input channels for sensing one sinusoidal AC waveform. An amplifier drives the gate of a FET that applies a voltage across the secondary coil, causing a magnetic field to be generated. When an AC current passes through the CT, a voltage is induced across the secondary coil, which is proportional to the magnetic field and therefore proportional to the AC current.
The PGA450Q1EVM also includes an integrated four-channel programmable state-of-the-art analog multiplexer that allows users to select the desired input signals for both the DC offset calibration and the current sensing applications. Additionally, the PGA450Q1EVM board has a built-in PGA450Q1 device that can be programmed to select the desired gain for the current sensing application. The on-board MCU can also be programmed to identify and monitor peak and valley current by logging data from the on-board PGA450Q1 device.
The PGA450Q1EVM offers users a complete solution for evaluating and demonstrating the features and capabilities of the PGA450Q1 device. The board is powered by a 5V, 1.5A power supply and provides current output up to 40A AC and up to 120W power. With its wide range of features and its intuitive user interface, the PGA450Q1EVM is an excellent tool for anyone looking to evaluate or demonstrate the capability of the PGA450Q1 device in a variety of current sensing applications.
