Introduction Protection Relays & Systems are used in power systems to protect the system from damage due to overload, short-circuit, overvoltage or any other electrical faults. One such protection relay is the PGM-8600, developed by Mitsubishi Electric, which is widely used in power systems across the globe. This article will discuss the application field and working principle of the PGM-8600. Application The PGM-8600 is mainly used for three-phase current and/or voltage protection applications in low and medium voltage power systems. It can be used to protect the overall system, partial circuits or individual equipment from overload, short-circuit, overvoltage, undervoltage, unbalanced current and voltage, as well as other types of electrical faults. The PGM-8600 can also be used in hazardous areas for applications where the risk of ignition due to electrical arcing cannot be ignored. It has an explosion-proof design and is certified for use in hazardous areas of groups IIA, IIB and IIG. Operating Principle The PGM-8600 is a digital, microprocessed protection relay which is programmed using a handheld device. It features built-in self-testing to check its own operation and detect any fault that may occur. This ensures that the system is reliable and capable of detecting any fault quickly and accurately. The working principle of the PGM-8600 is based on differential protection. When any fault occurs in the system, the current is diverted to the PGM-8600. The relay then calculates the differences between the current and voltage values and when these values exceed the preset parameters, the relay trips the circuit. The PGM-8600 can also perform additional functions to ensure the optimum safety of the power system, including auto restart, instantaneous over current trip, phase angle protection and voltage out-of-step protection. The relay is also equipped with a built-in HMI (Human Machine Interface) which allows for the user to configure and monitor the working of the relay remotely, and also provides insight into the various parameters of the relay, which can be used to detect any problems in the system. Conclusion The PGM-8600 is a digital, microprocessed protection relay used for three-phase current and/or voltage protection applications in low and medium voltage power systems. It can detect and trip the circuit upon the occurrence of any type of fault in the power system and also offers additional functions such as auto restart, instantaneous over current trip, phase angle protection and voltage out-of-step protection. The built-in HMI allows for easy configuration and monitoring of the relay. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
