Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits: PI7C9X7954AEVB Application Field and Working PrincipleEvaluation and demonstration boards and kits are designed with specific microcontroller-based applications in mind; in particular, the PI7C9X7954AEVB is a generic controller-based evaluation and demonstration board produced by Intel. This board is designed to support hardware-assisted PCI Express bus implementations.The PI7C9X7954AEVB is a flexible input/output device for evaluating new designs and developing PCIe applications on a wide range of products. It consists of four different components, which are its control, evaluation, signal-chain components, and connector. The control of the board includes a MCU (Microcontroller Unit) that is responsible for programming the FPGA, and a 9-bit wide bus is used to transfer data between the MCU and FPGA itself. An I/O planar is used for both data initialization as well as data communication between the MCU and FPGA. The signal-chain components of the PI7C9X7954AEVB include multiplexers and bus drivers for XOR and YOR functions. The connector of the board is used to interface with various other external devices such as flash memory, Ethernet controllers, and peripheral interface logic devices. Although the board is available in two different versions, the PI7C9X7954AEVB-X4 and the PI7C9X7954AEVB-X8, the latter is used more commonly as it provides more high-bandwidth PCIe Express links for hardware-assisted PCIe application designs.The working principle of the PI7C9X7954AEVB can be described as follows. After the board is powered on, the MCU reads data from the I/O planar’s registers and sends it to the FPGA.
