PIM186 is an expansion board in Evaluation Boards family which comprises expansion boards, daughter cards and other components for evaluating electronic development and realizing embedded system test. It is specifically designed for Raspberry Pi 4 model B system as an accessory of Raspberry Pi official expansion header HAT. It is developed for industrial engineering applications that use CAN networks, microprocessors, flexible PC expansion and protocol analysis, control applications, etc.

In the PIM186 application field, it readily handles CAN communication networks in connected embedded systems. It allows for two CAN networks to communicate and transmit data between them. The working principle of PIM186 is based on the CAN Controller DS89C450 that implements a wide range of CAN bus features like CAN 2.0A/B protocol compatibility, CAN bit rate up to 1Mbps, low latency, hardware compatible protocol, arbitration and priority levels, programmable bus segment, arbitration parameters, filtering and masking options. This CAN Controller is also backwards compatible with various latest protocols.

The PIM186 expansion board has two input CAN ports and one output CAN port. It also provides four digital inputs, one digital output, four analog inputs, and one analog output which are enabled by the onboard peripherals. The CAN ports are also provided with complete isolation to ensure error-free communication between two networks. Additionally, there is an onboard 300kHz/1MHz high speed oscillator which ensures that the application can be used at the maximum bit rate.
